What is a Covert Camera?

A covert camera is a hidden camera which isn’t visible to the naked eye. However there is a difference between a covert and a hidden camera although to all intents and purposes they are the same. A covert camera comes disguised as an everyday object like a pen, a clock, a pot plant,  whereas a hidden camera is a bullet camera which can be hidden in lights, walls, trees etc.

For the purposes of this article the terms hidden and covert are interchangeable, because it is all about their use.

Why Use Covert Cameras For Surveillance

The quick answer is because thieves who steal professionally, know a lot about outdoor security cameras. Thus they are able to evolve a planned entry and exit route, whilst they study your home prior to breaking in. They will know where the surveillance cameras are, and even the times you go in and out, and if there is a pattern to that. They will probably even be able to identify which cameras, if any, are dummy security cameras. If they are unaware of the covert camera then they can’t plan round it.

Don’t lose sight of the fact that visible outdoor security cameras are a deterrent, but more for the casual villain. The covert security camera is a necessary addition to your defensive weaponry. The intended intruder could be caught on camera whilst studying your property. Things like car number plates and physical identification are invaluable.

Some covert cameras are tiny, but will supply you with as good a picture as a standard outdoor security camera, the main problem being that many of them are not waterproof, and a lot of them require wiring. You can of course buy a wireless covert camera but only really for short range transmission.

Weatherproof housing for the camera does help to make it covert, and it can easily be placed in places like an overhead light which will have wiring and sockets anyway, so disguise is relatively simple. There are a number of other options readily available.

When to use Hidden or Covert Cameras?

There are a lot of different uses apart from the disguise  outside previously mentioned.

You can use them to monitor what goes on inside your home when you are not there. This means being able to check on a babysitter or childminder, even on your children if you suspect they may be behaving badly when you aren’t there. With teenagers it could be drugs, alcohol or pornography.

Another function of a hidden or covert outside security camera is if you have used normal surveillance cameras and they get either vandalised or you suspect they are being tampered with. Whoever is doing that won’t find the covert camera. Just remember to install it carefully and not make the installation appear obvious.

Perhaps you might own a holiday house which is empty for long periods. When it is empty and when you have tenants a covert camera just keeps a watchful eye. You must be careful of not breaking any privacy laws, so the hidden camera should only be positioned to cover entry and exit points
