 Should a Covert camera, or a hidden spy camera be part of your home crime prevention plan?

A hidden or covert camera is a still or video camera that is used to film people who don't realise it is there. Covert means hidden, and that means it isn't visible, or it is disguised.
Hidden cameras are being used increasingly for home surveillance, and can be built into almost anything from plants and bushes to birdbaths, and garden trellises.

Different Types of Covert Camera

A hidden camera can be wired or wireless. If wired it will be connected to a TV, VCR, or DVR, whereas a wireless hidden camera has no wires and it can be used to transmit a video signal to a receiver within a few hundred feet, dependent on obstructions like walls between it and the VCR.

Are Covert Hidden cameras a deterrent?

Covert Cameras by their nature are hidden, the kind of spy camera you don't want people to see, so can they play a part in deterring ?

On the face of it, the answer must be NO, because for a deterrent to work, it needs to be obvious.

However a covert camera has a definite part to play in an outdoor security camera system as part of a mixture of deterrents. It has a place alongside the dummy camera, the night vision security camera, and the motion activated camera, all of which if they fail to deter can be blocked or eliminated by a skilful thief, who will then not pick up the covert camera which may well identify him.

What are the drawbacks to a covert camera?

Principally that they are not designed for outside use, so you will need to have some kind of shell to surround it. This will reduce the clarity of the picture, but it needs to be dew proof or it will soon fail.

A garden shed window or a bird box would be two easy applications, or a greenhouse to give the weatherproofing they need. Of course an outside light is another place, or an ornament in a window overlooking the garden.

As a final point the hidden nature of a covert camera lends itself more to identification post crime than pre crime deterrence.
